Jerka Dumić

“Glycopharmacy: A new star on the horizon”

Jerka Dumić has received her undergraduate education in Medical Biochemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry University of Zagreb (1987-1992) and obtained her Ph.D. in 2000 in biomedical sciences at the University of Zagreb. She was doctoral fellow at Universität für Bodenkultur, Vienna, Austria (2000) and postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, USA (2002, 2003). Following the obligatory resident ship in Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory in General Hospital in Sibenik (1992-1993), she was appointed Research Assistant at the Department of Medical Biochemistry of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry University of Zagreb in 1993; Senior Research Assistant in 2000; Assistant Professor in 2002, Associate Professor in 2006, Professor in 2011, Professor with tenure in 2016. She was invited to serve as Visiting Scientist or Guest Professor at the University of Warsaw (2004), University of Ljubljana (2012, 2013) and La Sapienza University, Rome (2012), Charles University, Prague (2014). Professor Dumić served as a Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (2012-2017) and the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry University of Zagreb (2014-2016).
Her scientific activities, focused on glycoimmunobiology, development of new methods of diagnostic significance, molecular mechanisms of drug action, and pharmacogenomics, were reflected in more than 35 scientific publications. She was invited speaker on many scientific meetings, courses and summer schools. Professor Dumić is teaching Biochemistry courses, Immunology, Personalised healthcare and Molecular basis of diseases and therapy. She mentored over 20 diplomas and 6 PhD theses. In the period 2011-20015 was a co-ordinator of the Central European Exchange Program for University Studies (CEEPUS) exchange network.
J. Dumić is a member of the Croatian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and was Secretary General of the Society (2001-2007), Vice-President (2007-2009; 2013-), and President (2009-2013). She has been serving in the Following Scientific International or local Bodies: member of the Working group on Integration of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies - FEBS (2010-2014); the Scientific Field Committee for Natural Sciences - Biology (2011-2014) of the Agency for Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Croatia); Board for Research, Development and Technology of the University of Zagreb (2011-). Since 2017, she serves as a Chair of the FEBS Working Group of Integration and a Member of the FEBS Executive Committee.
Jerka Dumić received the National Award for Young Scientist for 2001.
